If you were a Viking jarl attempting to draft the best gang of sea marauders to join you on a quest, you would probably try very hard to draft Madilynn Castillo. Fierce, determined, loyal, and highly capable, Madi would not only be great in battle, but would also be able to figure out any weird problems your longship ran into, could make you some awesome secret family recipe red rice (exclusive: the secret is revealed below!), and win any arguments you find yourself stuck in.
Meanwhile, as you were stuck in a boat for weeks on end, she would greatly improve your trip by being a great adventure buddy to go explore whichever corners of the ship you hadn’t already seen a billion times, or make even those seem new and exciting. And if your ship happened to rely on captured thrall labor, or treated women less fairly than men (as Vikings increasingly did after the introduction of Christianity in the 13th century), then Madi’s the one you want to have on board to fight tenaciously for equality and justice, with an eloquence and passion that will make even the most battle-hardened, drug-addled berserkers cower in awe.
What was your favorite debate case? I had a case about English dialects in public schools that I loved because it gave me a chance to talk about different forms of English. I hate when people criticize someone because of their use of “ improper” English. Language has become a tool for people to discount someone’s ideas because of their class and/or race.
Do you hate-consume any media, and if so, what? Why the hate? I watch Vanderpump Rules…it’s a Bravo show about the social life of the staff of Sexy Unique Restaurant (SUR) in West Hollywood. It’s less of a hate watch and more of a shame watch.
Who are your heroes, and why? My everyday heroes are people in the service industry. People treat them terribly whenever anything goes wrong, and they rarely get thanked or acknowledged when things run smoothly. Silent heroes.
If you could eradicate one thing from this world, what would it be? Mosquitoes.
If you could add something entirely new to this world that doesn’t exist, what would it
be? A way to cheaply clean water.
What is your secret family recipe for red rice? Toast 2 cups of jasmine rice in a pan. Add 1 cup diced potato, 2-3 cloves of minced garlic, 3 cups chicken stock, 1 can tomato paste, 2 cans water & 1 roasted jalapeno. Cover and cook until the water evaporates.
If you could make something required reading for everyone on the planet, what would it be? I don’t have a good recommendation for everyone on the planet. However, for anyone that likes science fiction, world-building, and interesting female characters I would recommend the Stormlight Archives by Brandon Sanderson.
Kate’s question: What is one piece of life wisdom you’ve learned in the past 5 years? Salt food to taste as you cook!
What question should I ask the next person? Ask what podcast(s) they listen to!
